Out of action.
Hey guys. I have a big problem. I have 2 desktop PC's in my house, and about 5 weeks ago, one of them crapped up on me. Every time I turned on the computer, it would power up, get as far as the windows loading screen, and just power off, and then it would power up again, and the PSU was running, but no HD light, no fan noises, nothing, and it just stayed like that. Wasnt too big a deal, just used the other ocmputer (im away in uni with my laptop so it doesnt bother me at all.) I came home 2 weeks ago, and was told my mam needed some work documents from the hard drive from the first PC, so I took out the hard drive from the first pc (family one) and stuck it into my own one, and copied the files from there, and backed up photos etc, then put the HD back in the original PC. The following day, my second PC (my own gaming one)had the exact same problem, except it just cuts out and nothing else happens. So my parents brought in the first PC into our local tech shop, and they said it was a boot virus. as far as I know, they've fixed the home computer(the first one) but I need to fix the second one, ideally without losing any data (family photos etc) because I didn't back them up.... clever eh? I have 2 computers and a laptop to use (one of which is out of action, the one I want to fix) so anyone any idea what the best tihng to do is? when I googled it I saw I'd lose my data.....
Re: Out of action.
my idea would be to use a linux live cd to boot off of then transfer the data from there. Dunno if it would work or not.
good luck all the same

dunno much about your virus but try to re install windows or uni. It might fix it just to give ya the time to copy ur file to an other drive. I would use a completly free external hard as u don't know how "travels" ur virus and then check if the virus is on it with a good anti virus /spy software.
If ya cant reinstall your system, then ya can buy a box where ya can plug ur internal hd and then use it as an external hd. Again the virus might be on it.
That's what i would do.
Dunno if it helps....

Re: Out of action.
IF it is a boot virus one way round it is to do a search for Portable Apps and get a USB key and copy some virus scanner software onit. Boot from the USB (or DVD etc) and scan your computer that way.
Example
http://www.pendriveapps.com/software/po ... -firewall/
Ora better way to clean it would be to use BartsPE and make sure you download the mcafee cleaner and adaware (read the page!) before building the boot CD/DVD.
Anotherway is to try and fix the MBR (master boot record) do a google for 'Fix MBR'. I have had problems with MBR fixs before ending up with lost data, though its said that should never happen.

Re: Out of action.
so we got the family PC back today, an Im home, and windows needed to be reinstalled (no programs booting, pc was uber slow) so I did my backups, then reinstall, but now my mouse wont work. its fine at first, but I have my drivers copied onto a usb drive, and the pen drive wouldnt work for a while, butthen it did, and I installed my network driver and the screen flkickered and the mosue stopped working. hte red optical light is still on, and so is the blue LED on top of the mouse, but doesnt respond..... this is etting really fucking annoying.
