wow, that ethernet cable website just talks the most godawful bollocks. Anyhoo I just bought one of these:

Cougar 700k Mechanical keyboard

Image

There are a gazillion reviews that say it's ok, although they never really get past the unboxing, clacking on a few keys, and playing with the backlighting.

But if you're in the market for a backlit, mechanical, macro-capable keyboard I do recommend it. The keyboard stores all it's settings within the keyboard, so you're not dependent upon PC software or a PC-stored configuration, and you can set up most things you'd want purely via the keyboard (such as creating a profile that only illuminates certain keys, or programming *any* key on the keyboard to playback any set of keystrokes. But creating keystroke macros is slightly easier via the packaged 'UIX' software (you can choose the keypress timing, instead of recording the times you pressed during the record, so you can have much faster macros if the game will cope). But the UIX software is shit to the extent you can't actually *edit* a macro, all you can do is re-record one, so if you miss a keystroke you have to start again.

But I still recommend it.

Awesome. I see it uses Cherry MX switches.. what colour did you go for?

Just bought my first mechanical for shits and giggles, a ducky zero - pretty much the plainest non-backlit basic mech keyboard out there, but it's really good. Went for the brown Cherry MX switches myself which are meant to be as good for typing as well as gaming. Thing weighs a tonne.

Cherry MX Red.. click clacky all the way.. not great for typing, but you get used to it. I like the dedicated macro keys are placed/angled away from the regular keys, I like the way the M1 M2 M3 buttons easily one-click switch you between profiles (my M1 = gaming with the WASD and a few other keys lit up and nothing else, M2 = 'normal' without backlighting at all), and I like the fact all settings are actually on the keyboard so you're not totally dependent on some wanky configuration utility that needs to be running while you're gaming.
