GFX card recommendations

My old AMD 6950 is showing its age and was thinking that I might have to get another. Id be thinking of the higher end of the midrange cards maybe 300-400 euros (250-350 pounds)

Any recommendations?

Re: GFX card recommendations

Hi Schlack

I've been keeping a little bit up to date since I did my build just to see what's on the horizon, and it looks like most people are going for the gtx970 .. It says 4gb vram but Nvidia fucked up so it's actually only 3.5gb – for most people the extra 500mb of vram won't matter, I would think this would only matter if you are trying to run 4k monitor or something which this card couldn't really do anyway.

I think it's either that or if you really want to splash I'd go the next card the gtx980 awesome card but you pay for it and could be out of budget.

In terms of aftermarket cooler depends on your system but the EVGA, MSI, Asus cards are well regarded.

Komplett.ie have an Asus one on at 389 which is in budget

Re: GFX card recommendations

Cheers Wes. Last 2 cards were amd. While they are better in processing power it seems that developers favour NVidia disproportionately. Fallout 4 and Elite dangerous aren't great on amd.

Just bought a new monitor and didn't go for 4k. The intention is that it will be my second monitor in a few years! Will likely upgrade card and monitor again then - with 4 or 16 or 32K or whether is out then.

Gtx970 seems to be a consensus recommendation from those I've asked. (seems to be rift ready too! https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comment ... _the_rift/)

Need to double check the Mobo PCI slot when I get home. Will probably buy the wrong card, then need a new mobo, sure might as well get new ram then and perhaps a new processor. that would be awful.

I'm running a 970 on a 4k monitor - it's only CSGo for sure but smooth as Slartys cock.

Re: GFX card recommendations

I am currently looking for a new Gtx probably on about the same budget as schlacky. Would the recommendations for of the Gtx 970 or gtx 980 still be a good choice for today?

Re: GFX card recommendations

970 is still a really good pick today Yoda. The 980 is very expensive for the performance increase.

Re: GFX card recommendations

Thanks for the advice guys, I am off to Hong Kong next week so I might try and pick up a card from there as it's cheaper!!

Any difference between Asus and MSI manufacturers? Schlacky bought an MSI and was wondering how he is getting on with it? Both seem to be the same price for their 970 cards

Re: GFX card recommendations

There's a discussion about Asus, gigabyte and MSI over at tomshardware..

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/i ... x-970.html

I'd say there's not much in it, they're all solid, so probably get whatever is cheapest of the three.

Also double check the dimensions of the card.. I believe the twin frozr msi cards are f*king huge.
