When potato plants bloom, they send up five-lobed flowers that spangle fields like fat purple stars. By some accounts, Marie Antoinette liked the blossoms so much that she put them in her hair. Her husband, Louis XVI, put one in his buttonhole, inspiring a brief vogue in which the French aristocracy swanned around with potato plants on their clothes. The flowers were part of an attempt to persuade French farmers to plant and French diners to eat this strange new species.

The holy potato was brought in europe by the Spanish, but was unpopular in europe at the start.

In france came the unpopular king Louix XVI, which thought of the potato as a solution for poor people to eat.
He gave 2 hectares to M. Parmentier to cultivate it.

After few weeks, Mr Parmentier offers to the king the white flower of the potato. The king put some of these flowers on his costume and his wife on her hat during a celebration.

After few month (and many potatoes dinners), Louis XVI classified the turberosum as utile in the gardens.


Do you know that the Canadians built the "Canadian Potato Research Centre" in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was one of the top six potato research institutes in the world ?
