Judging from a review I've just read (in German) it seems the ATI card is slightly better in terms of computing power (apart from DirectX 11), power consumption and noise. In certain DirectX-10 benchmarks the ATI even outperforms the GTX 480.

re graphics cards, the nvidia 470 is actually slightly cheaper than the 5870 so I'd be tempted to save the £23. But the 5870 (I have one) works pretty well for me without getting hot, and as I'm a 3-screen gamer the ATI wins there. CSS and L4D2 both give very (absurdly) high framerates so that's a bit of a non-issue.

Re cpu there is absolutely no comparison between Intel and Amd... either an i5 750 or an i7 930 can be massively, easily, overclocked so gamers get top-end performance without the premium. I reckon with the Intel cooler an i5 750 would typically go from 2.66Ghz to 3.6, and if you pay 50 quid for a better cooler you get 4GHz - AMD cannot come close to that performance.

Some quick and easy guides. Contrary to the above, the new AMD's clock higher in some cases than the Intel's, and perform at similar levels in some tasks (X6 rises to 4.1-4.2GHz on air). Any advice is subjective to peoples own preferences. Do the the research and combine the two. (P.S I'm being objective, as I am indeed an Intel owner, but I will seriously consider AMD on my next upgrade alongside another Intel product. AMD's Six-Core Phenom II X6 1090T looks interesting just now, but bangs for bucks is my main concern as a tight Highlander )

If you are lucky enough to already own an AMD based system, the upgrade path is incredibly cheaper, without compromising much performance, as they have a much better upgrade path (AMD's main selling point to my mind. Older mobos and Ram working with newer processors etc). If you are building a whole new system with with a high budget, then Intel comes back to the fore with triple channel DDR3 and hyper threading, which the 6 Core AMD cannot support.

I always consider all the options, and next week the prices may be different between the two products, and that can tip the balance one way or another. You won't go wrong with either, but one will suit better dependent on your main requirements:- Bangs for bucks, multi-tasking, CAD, Video editing, Gaming only, Budget driven, Loyalty etc etc.
