My son wants one for christmas and I know little or nothing about them .
Whats the best one to buy?
Which controllers are best?
Is xbox live a rip off?
is it hard to flash the firmware to accept "backup " games?
Are there parental controls for sex/drugs/violence?
Any advice would be welcomed

The Wireless ones - They take 2 AA Batterys and last months before you have to change them.
Depeneds on how much you are going to use it - I got 13 Months for £30 from a site.
If you flash the firmware there is a high chance that you will be banned from Xbox live, i don't belive it is that hard to do though.
I think there might be parental controls but i have never looked or used them.
I bought one because i was fed up with games not running right on pc, lagging and just generally annoying me. I don't have alot of time to game anymore and the Xbox is perfect, just plug in and play away + With some mates Xbox live is very fun.
P.s Halo is shit and is so over hyped it is unbelivable.

About the controls-
AA batteries in them run out in the space of a week or so with any sort of regular use. Buy a play and charge kit from gamestop, its like 10 euro and you can recharge while playing by plugging it in.
I dont like xbox live myself, you do get a whole load of people on screaming and shouting and just acting the ass, like you do on steam and CS etc, but to a worse level, I personally think its a waste, but you can buy it cheap from sites online for 3 months, best bet is to try it out and see what you think.

Theres loads of tutorials on google, with how to do it, and how to get the backups of the games and to burn them etc.

Just dont do it, always paying for monthly online service .....when the PS3 is free and fantastic....you know it's the way forward...with a free blu-ray player as well

Bit the bullet and bought one this week .
Xbox 360 elite ,120gb hard drive , 1 extra controller and 6 games 300 euro's
Luckily its for my son, (8) who won't be playing online , seemingly you have to pay to play for multiplayer and pay for downloadable updates
Haven't used it yet as Santy is bringing it ( so I don't know which of the 3 types of drive it is ), but am interested in flashing the firmware for the DVD drive , if anyone has done this or has any
knowledge I'd be very appreciative.

I found http://www.xbox-scene.com to be very useful when flashing my 360. So far I've happily had all the updates off XB live whilst running a hacked drive. Plenty of different firmwares to chose from depending on your 360 version - I went with iXtreme Stealth, the point being it's virtually undetectable by XB live. I dont pay a monthly fee for it, just the basic silver level access.
I read somewhere though that with a recent update and games being released with a new file format or something, you may find the most modern games are not so easy to copy / crack as the older gen.
Don't make the same mistake I did and buy that pointless Xecuter blaster thing - cost me £30, provides easy flashing access without opening the box. Not once have I ever had to use it yet
first flash I did with direct connection to the drive and there have been no new firmware updates since then.
Good call on the 120gb drive, I'm stuck with a overflowing 20gb one, no where near enough space!

game updates are grand from xbox live, but I wouldnt advise firmware updates from XBL when your running a hacked box. I know its a touchy subject here about this kind of stuff but PM me if you want to talk about it slarti.
