VNC client? Which one?

I'm just looking for a client to control my laptops via the desktop PC and vice versa.

Any recommendations?

Definitely TightVNC on Windows. Server, however needs to support compression modes if you want to use them.
xvnc4viewer, vinagre or xtightvncviewer on Linux (apt-get install ...)
