Re: I HATE MICROSOFT

I think Microsoft hasn't actually released a *new* operating system for a decade. It seems a lot of effort goes into superficial changes to the UI (e.g. round off some corners, make bits translucent) and maybe some of the applications get updated. Linux hasn't changed either but then no-one pretends it has. But I'm using Windows (XP) right now and the browser (Firefox) works so who gives a stuff.

I object, Linux has changed dramatically compared to Windows. Accessibility and usability for a common user has improved dramatically, bits in the command line are still necessary but if one wishes to only use it for Internet and some simple Office stuff, it works a treat (not to mention how wonderful it works for IT professionals).

There are several desktop environments available (to mention few Gnome, KDE and XFCE). Updates come out very often, most GNU/Linux systems are superior when it comes to default security settings (as we know most users won't change them - that's why Windows is so bad), a lot of hardware is supported these days and it's still improving, new distros come out every few months (such as Ubuntu), and the list goes on.

I just installed Win7 in my Virtualbox - first thing it made a small partition at the beginning of the drive, God knows for what reason. And the Control Panel must be the worst piece of user interface ever invented - I have never seen so may different types of control elements and the menu hides itself so it's virtually impossible to find out where you are.

Re: I HATE MICROSOFT

Jazzy you dont have to sell me Linux, I have a PhD in computer science - maybe I'm being too nerdy but for me a new UI isn't actually a new operating system. At least with Linux the UI's can co-exist (no-one is pretending they're an OS) versus Windows where MSoft would suggest that putting the Windows 7 UI on top of the XP base is somehow meaningless. I'd agree it's meaningless because Window 7 *is* just a new UI on top of the XP base, not because Windows 7 is a new OS.

So to offend both Windows and Linux lovers I'd say MSoft is talking bolox by pretending Windows 7 is a new OS, and while Linux now has a choice of effective GUI's the base OS hasn't changed much in a decade.

Of course UI is not a new OS. You're talking too techy for this kind of conversation :) However GNU/Linux gives you the options to choose anything you like as GUI with all the trinkets such as Compiz that make Aero look ridiculous. You do not have that choice with Windows.

I just got fed up with Windows as a web developer - I found that every single tool I need to use to make that OS work for me is paid for, buggy or cannot be customised enough.
